QUEENSLAND RAIL HERITAGE
This project forms part of the University of Queensland School of Architecture’s research into Digital Cultural Heritage. The project focused upon documenting and presenting several stations across the Queensland Rail network that are of cultural significance. The models displayed below are intended to provide an accessible and information-rich method for viewing aspects of the aforementioned buildings that usually remain hidden or unnoticed. In doing so, it is hoped that the public’s understanding and appreciation of each station’s cultural significance is increased.
To make the 3D models, a laser scanner was used to map each station and its surrounds. Next, the modelling program Revit was used to map over the collected laser scan data. This created a series of elements such as walls and floors, which match the original form of the station, and also allowed for each element to have extra information (such as date of construction) attached to it. This extra data is not visible within the model on this site, but download links are provided for the original Revit model.
Originally established to provide access to the Eagle Farm Racecourse, Ascot Station is an example of a railway station that has a strong association to its surrounding context and is linked to social events that have occurred throughout the development of the racecourse.
Consequently, it carries a strong degree of cultural significance to South-East Queensland. In addition, the 1914 station building is notable for its technical innovation, being one of the first buildings in Australia to be constructed utilising a system of prefabricated concrete posts, beams and panels.
Original semaphore signals are among the last examples remaining within Queensland. Ascot Station fulfils the criterion for six of eight categories of significance as defined by the Queensland Heritage Register, and gained State Heritage listing on the 25th of June, 2004.
